“He’s behind you!”
Play, Performance and Pantomime in Fun English

Students and teachers agree that Drama is a fun and effective way to provide opportunities to learn and speak in English. Through teaching Drama, we enable our students to become confident, articulate communicators and to foster a life-long love of reading through imagination and play. In Fun English lessons, our students have the exciting chance to experience a range of different types of Drama; role play, puppet play, masked drama, readers’ theatre - and new to J5 this year – pantomime.
Pantomime is a type of funny dramatic performance that is very popular in England. It is aimed at children and involves singing and jokes to tell a story based on a nursery story or fairy tale. Pantomime encourages audience participation, including calls of “He’s behind you!” or “Look out!” This year, J5 students performed Jack and the Beanstalk. The (literally) larger-than-life characters included hungry giants, magicians and even talking cows – allowing our students to use exaggerated voices and movements to put on a lively and entertaining show.
When it’s time for Show Time, we provide our students with a Drama Space - either in the classroom, reading room or school hall. We have high expectations of our students and everyone takes part in the performance. Drama not only develops reading comprehension but enriches the experience of learning English overall. Through this exciting and funny way to learn, we will continue to play and perform in Fun English.
