At the beginning of the school year our students make a promise; to speak English actively wherever at school or at home. This commitment to speaking English is supported by the school on our monthly English Speaking Days. With the chance to win a prize as well as finding out more about each other, the children are excited to chat with their friends and teachers on English Speaking Day.

S.K.H Ma On Shan Holy Spirit Primary School encourages students to speak and learn English in lots of different ways. English Speaking Day is just one of the many additions to the rich English-speaking culture at the school. Not only does English Speaking Day help to improve fluency and confidence in speaking English, it is an opportunity for the children to think in English and use authentic language in meaningful conversations about their own ideas, dreams and personal interests.

Every month, there is a new and interesting topic set for English Speaking Day. So far this year, we have enjoyed chatting about our ‘Dream Birthday Party’, ‘The One I Thank For’ and ‘My Friends’. The children can find the list of topics inside their English Passports. The week before English Speaking Day takes place, the children are provided with a list of questions to help them prepare some answers and think about what they want to talk about. Students are encouraged to start up a conversation with their teachers or English Smarties about the particular topic during recess time.

There are some fun rules applied to ‘English Speaking Day’ to encourage our students to speak more. The children should keep a record of their conversations by collecting stamps or signatures. If the children can get 10 stamps or more in a term, they can get a prize. If they can get more than 20 stamps, they can get a grand prize! Inside their English passports, the children have their own personal report, stating how many stamps they have gathered during the term. Needless to say, the children are enthusiastic about collecting as many stamps as they can. We will continue our English Speaking Days as a fun and interesting way to motivate speaking and learning English together.
